i was reading through this thread this morning and after eating fried potatoes for dinner i had an idea. would it not be cool as hell for someone to manufacture a suppressor that looks like a potato. have it shaped on the outside like a potato and painted to look like one.

Okay, this is likely a stupid question.

HOW do you build a suppressor?

I'm not talking about paperwork, I'm talking about the physical act or getting a lathe and some stock and putting it together. Besides the money bit, I am VERY interested in a suppressor and like to tinker with stuff....

Any links?

well i am a very novice machinist just getting started really. anyway you will most definitely need a lathe any good lathe will do and you need a good set of bits. what you need specifically will depend on how you plan to build it. a mill is good also for doing the baffle, again what type of mill depends on design. others who do this a lot can give you better insight.

I've never built a silencer, but I own a couple and have researched the various designs a bit. For the beginner, the two key things (3 if you count the approved Form 1) are using a tube that will contain the enormous pressure without turning to shrapnel; and connecting the assembly to the weapon perfectly concentrically so that you don't get baffle strikes.

The guts can be simple. Home machinists aren't going to be making K baffles or other exotic twisty-turning things, but with some washers, a hack saw, a drill and an inner tube of slightly smaller dimension, one could make a decent unit after FIRST getting the approved Form 1 back with stamp affixed.

Remember, a 2-liter soda bottle will make an effective silencer for a few shots, so spacing a washer every inch or so should create enough dissipation to work OK.

Look at the old Maxim silencer designs, there are some pics of traditional internals to be found.
