When I get chance I`ll ask some questions as I have friends on the Special Response Unit and one that`s a detective. A couple are currently military reserve too.
Bethlehem has made significant changes in policy since the Hirko incident so this sounds just a bit funny.

It's good in these situations to rely only on verified facts and objective evidence, evaluated through logic alone. The media is always suspect because they make money reporting news, and make more money with sensational news, embellished or not. I haven't gone through the facts entirely but here's a short list which I suggest the member here build on:
* 16 guns isn't an arsenal, we probably all know a few people with more in their gun collections
* 6 hours is a long time, was there really a standoff ?
* Like in a court of law the witness' veracity needs to be checked - what's her mental state and background?

These are not a lot of facts to form a firm opinion yet, at least in my perspective.

I give some leeway to any who have served to protect our country, nonetheless a Sergeant. We should do that here too before making any judgments.

We can all take heed from his words about being accused if you are a gun owner. I find that a valuable concern to raise.

There are those in our governments who have been shown to think they are above the law, who can be quite vindictive in wielding the power of their office, and who abuse their positions for political gain. With a self-serving media easy to manipulate by adding sensational twists, they can wreak havoc on any one individual. We all need to be vigilant on that aspect as gun owners. I am not saying if that happened here, but we do need to keep an open mind for all possibilities in light of very few objective facts so far.

The original post was from May of 2007. I don't remember hearing anything about the trial that was supposed to be held last September. I couldn't find anything about it either. I would think if there was something to report about the DA successfully prosecuting this, there would have been a follow up in the newspapers. UNLESS there turned out to be a weak case that either plead out to what may sound like a 'good deal' at the time, or it was dismissed b/c the witness proved to be unreliable. Don't know.

All I've got to say is 16 firearms is a nice collection, and not shocking... and one should have ammo for all 'shooters' in the safe. Newspapers sell based on reporting of news. If there isn't something juicy enough, they will 'juice it up' if need be, accuracy be damned.

I've learned (from experience) not to judge right or wrong from hearing only one side of a story, especially if reported by the media.

I was always taught that there were three sides to every story and unless you were there, you really don't know what took place. I'm surely not going to form an opinion by reading the account of what happend in the newspaper. There are only two people that really know what happend that day/night.

Without being at the trial to hear what were hopefully the facts of the case, I'll not form any opinion of what happend.

The media is out of control. They say anything to sell papers and get advertising $$$

All of this information is public record and can be found on the net with a little google-fu! Currently the status of this case is adjudicated. This is the following information I was able to find from court records, a total of 13 counts. I hope this helps answer some of the questions people have.

Charged by the Bethlehem City Police Dept officer Diluzio

18 2701 A1 - Simple Assault
18 2701 A3 - Simple Assault
18 2705 - Recklessly endangering another person
18 2706 A1 - Terroristic Threats with intent to terrorize another
18 2706 A3 - Terroristic threats cause serious public inconvenience
18 907 A - Possession of an instrument of a crime with intent
18 907 B - Possession of a weapon
18 2702 A1 - Aggravated Assault
18 2702 A3 - Aggravated Assault
18 2706 A1 - Terroristic Threats with intent to terrorize another
18 2706 A3 - Terroristic threats cause serious public inconvenience
18 907 A - Possession of an instrument of a crime with intent
18 907 B - Possession of a weapon

All 13 counts held for court (lower court)

05/25/07 - Arraignment
06/01/07 - Preliminary Hearing - Continuance
07/19/07 - Preliminary Hearing - Continuance
09/26/07 - Preliminary Hearing - HDCT

He filed a guilty plea

all charges but the Terroistic Threats were withdrawn.
Filed Nolo Contendre on the Terroristic threats with intent to terrorize
and Guilty Threats cause serious public inconvienence.
Received probation for 5 years.
And has a pretty good chunk of change to pay.
They should have at least let him sell the firearms to pay his court costs.

And before I get jumped on the guy should never own another firearm again.
I'm just saying he paid for them the probation office could have gone with him and watched him sell to a dealer so he can use that money to pay his fines.

Generally, yes... but I found the article quoted here by OP to be reasonable - they called the grenade launcher a smoke launcher, 16 guns Is a large amount of guns, imho. They didn't start throwing phrases around like "enough to arm a militia", "assault rifle" and "people killers" (hollowpoints or guns, depending).

All told, I'd give the article a b+... not much in a 5 hour standoff where the cops seize 16 assorted pistols/rifles/shotguns is going to seem "pro-gun".
