Student dead after shooting at Tenn. school
Police say suspect, victim knew each other; school to release students soon

breaking news

updated 19 minutes ago
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - A 16-year-old student has died after a shooting at a Knoxville high school, authorities said on Thursday.

Knoxville chief deputy Bill Roehl said a suspect was taken into custody Thursday morning after the shooting shortly after 8 a.m. at the Central High School cafeteria.

Authorities haven't released the names of the victim, who died at University of Tennessee Medical Center, or the suspect. Roehl said no other students were injured.

Roehl said the suspect and victim knew each other, adding, "This wasn't a shooting that was a random act."

The school, which has about 1,400 students, was placed on lockdown after the shooting. School officials were preparing to release students one classroom at a time, then bus them to a church so they could be picked up by their parents.

Its always horrible to see a young life taken like this...

I have a feeling that the dead kid was the bully and the one who pulled the trigger was his prey.

Even still, there are many other ways that this kid could have handled the situation in a way that would not have ended with the death of another.

What happened to the good old days of sucker punching someone and then beating the stuff outta them?

It also could have been a situation like the boy in CA who killed the gay boy that was saying the messed around (maybe they did and he was ashamed or maybe they didn't and he was crazy mad). It is always horible this happens and I am afraid this will be used as another example about why guns need to be only in the hands of government.
