yeah...i'm a bit confused too...why would we boycott a company for giving its workers what the workers asked for?

Let's give them Cinco de Mayo off too since the other 500 employees are illegal aliens from Latin America!

but, if i did have some ownership/managerial interest in tyson, and enough of their workers wanted cinco de mayo off (in place of some other holiday) to get it into the union contract proposal (which was overwhelmingly voted for by the union workers, btw), then sure, why not? as long as it does not interfere with running production lines or anything like that, what the heck difference does it make to me? (i'm not really into the concept of forcing my holidays onto others.) as for their employing illegal immigrants, that is a different issue altogether. |

You all forget abbout tthe other 500 who work at the plant. How about all the people who had NO SAY like truck drivers either p/u or delivering to the plant. I can just hear it now IF YOU DON`T SHOW UP ON LABOR DAY WE`ll FIND SOME ONE ELSE. Like it really matters in this country anymore. If the muslims have the right I think Tyson should honor every other ones requests. I`m done buying Tyson. THAT is my freedom of choice. Anyone ask how did so many somalians find 700 jobs there? I smell a rat.

First, it doesn't much matter what the minority group is in the 1200 when it comes to a union democratic process. The majority are Muslim, and they wanted off a certain day of the year bad enough that they called a vote and won their right to have the union represent their interests. Second, these are not ILLEGAL aliens. These are Somali Muslims who are here legally. Stop attempting to equate everyone who isn't a white Christian with illegal aliens. Third, if they are illegal then the union has a LOT to answer for, not Tyson, as the union is the group who provides the workforce to the company. Lastly, so what if they were Mexican and wanted off Cinco de Mayo? If they won a vote in a democratic process followed by the union then why shouldn't they have their rights represented? As long as they are NOT illegal (which as per the article we have NO reason to suspect they are), then this isn't an issue in which any local, state, or federal government should intervene. Quote:
Like I said, I don't like the decision either, but I don't have to like it; I don't work there and don't have to put up with it.

I've been boycotting Tyson ever since I moved out of the house and was on my own. that shit's too expensive.
I exclusively buy Weis store-brand skinless, boneless chicken breast on sale, and I never buy processed, boxed crap either.

CR, LRT, dobe, MJF, TC & jah, I'm with you guys, it was a union decision. I was a teamster for years, majority rules.
Some people see an article like this and try to read into it something that's not there or they just don't read the whole thing and make judgments on parts of the whole story. This isn't a racial thing at all. It isn't a Tyson foods thing either. It's just a local union getting something for the workers that the majority must have wanted, plain & simple. Bill .

It's not about the union, it's about the path Ammerican commerce is headed.
