1 dead, 1 injured in Harrisburg 'gun battle,' police say
by CARRIE CASSIDY, The Patriot-News
Sunday July 13, 2008, 2:06 PM

Harrisburg police confirm that one man was shot to death and another critically wounded in a "gun battle" that happened between 10 and 11 a.m. today.

Witnesses who gathered in the area said a man kicked in the door of a home in the 400 block of South 17th Street before shots rang out. One of the men laid dead face down on a porch on the second-floor of the house. The other man stumbled to a home a few houses north. His blood was marked by police with evidence markers along South 17th Street.

Police did not identify the men involved in what police Chief Charles Kellar described as a "gun battle."

Several people who know the victims said the gun fight was over a woman.

The wounded man, who witnesses said kicked in the door, was first taken to Harrisburg Hospital but may have been transported to Hershey Medical Center. He was last known to be in critical condition, about to undergo surgery.

Kellar said two women who were taken inside the house at the time of the shootings, one of whom may have been on the phone with emergency dispatchers, were taken to the Harrisburg police station for questioning.

Kellar also confirmed that at least one young child was removed from the house, though witnesses say two small children were in the house when the gun fight happened.

My buddy just applied for his ccw like a week ago to carry. He lives in downtown Harrisburg. I've been there a ton of times and I don't blame him.. Although to be honest, Harrisburg doesn't realllly get me on edge...

Downtown Harrisburg sucks. It's no Philly, but it's pretty shady.

Harrisburg really does not really put the screws to me either, but york sure does. York is a small city, granted. But it has all the same problems of a major metropolis. Not a weekend on duty goes by with out a stabbing, shooting, heroin or some other drug OD. The really scary part is that say 80-90% of violent crimes do not kake the papers.

Anybody here the one about the guy who got cut dang near in half by an AK a few weeks ago?????
