Pregnancy, on the other hand, refers to a mother and a baby. In IVF labs, eggs are fertilized all the time, but we wouldn't say that the test tubes are pregnant. At what point is the mother pregnant? Some would say as soon as an egg is fertilized or introduced into the uterus via IVF. Some would say only once the embryo has attached itself to the uterus. Oral contraceptive pills (OCP) are designed to prevent ovulation, and AFAIK they are effective in doing this. They also thicken cervical mucus (making it more difficult for sperm to enter the uterus) and regulate endometrial (lining of the uterus) growth, which translates to lighter periods. It has been suggested - but it remains unproven - that the alteration to the endometrial growth could interfere with the implantation of an embryo. If you believe that pregnancy begins at conception, that equals abortion. But there is no scientific consensus on what impact the pill has on the rate of successful implantation (which is never 100% even in non-OCP users), if any. |

Again not to get into the life begins when issue cause that is not the topic here. I just didn't know if there was a defined instance that a woman is pregnant. Because it can not be when the egg attaches to the uterus because an ectopic pregnancy would not be a pregnance then. So at some point along the gestational timeline a pregnancy is "official." So all I am saying is that depending on that it may not even be about redefining anything.
Bottom line though is that this is a DRAFT RULE. Nothing official or even final. I don't think this is anything to get up in arms about. There are plenty of drafts that float around Capitol Hill. If we got upset over every messed up one we would all be on Zanex.

Good point made above, the embryo does not know where it is implanted and in the case of an ectopic pregnancy it will attempt to proceed as normal.
I disagree, though, that it's not worth worrying about because it's only a draft rule. I bet the reason we are hearing about it is to gauge public reaction. It is not something that would be out of character for this administration, and people are rightly concerned. |

I feel people should be able to do what they want. Ron Paul's views on abortion are the only thing I don't like about him. I still don't like any kind of chemical birth control on the women's part becuase:
#1. Common sense tells me chemical contraceptives are not healthful for women. #2. I think chemical contraceptives give some women the idea that it's okay to be loose. On more than a couple of occasions, I've had women tell me the "It's okay, I'm on the pill" line. This was after I knew them for only a night or so. So the inevitable thought I would have is, "If this chick thinks it's okay to do this with me, unprotected and after only knowing each other for a couple of hours, how many other guys has she done this with". Even when I had a rubber on me, the fact that the girl said that kind of put a taint on the situation.
