"...this nation's military and how they would not fire on American citizens. Do you think the Canadian or Mexican military have the same scrupels? I think not."
That's exactly why our gov't has gotten into this deal with Canada and mexico. Our military will not fire on our people, but you just get someone else to do the dirty work. |

As conspiratorial as it sounds I'm afraid it is probably 100% accurate.

When they do that would be like the extra easy bonus round in a video game. The UN troops would be mostly US troops or untrained ineffective jokers. Look at what happens in the Sudan. A group of rebels on horseback attacked a UN convoy (motorized vehicles I would assume) and won.

as an example: http://www.ssrsi.org/Onsite/BBStext/shootus.htm and this is only under the pressure of filling out a survey. the pressure to follow actual orders (whatever they are) in the military is extremely high. also, numerous psychological studies (most famously, the milgram experiment) show that most people will follow random orders to at least inflict a great deal of pain on another. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milgram_experiment the sad truth is that most people are basically lemmings. they'll pretty much do whatever they are told. so, i have no faith whatsoever that american troops in general would disobey an order to fire on american citizens...some would, of course, but they would prolly be court-martialed. |

If I was still active duty and I was given that order, I would just look for everyone with a MAC, women with hair armpits, anyone in a Volkswagon, or anyone with a protest sign. Sure I may get a couple wrong but odds are in my favor that I would be making the country a better place.

The thing is that they are only bound to execute "lawful" orders of their superiors. If what they are ordered to do are not lawful they have a duty to not execute said orders and instead refuse them outright.

in my (admittedly limited) time in the military, i experienced unlawful orders being issued and followed on an institutional level...ironically, shortly after lip service was paid to the concept of not following illegal orders--and having explained to us how those particular orders were no longer to be issued or followed. and, of course, there is the issue of who determines whether or not the order is lawful... and, the actions of some national guardsmen in NOLA after katrina spring immediately to mind... |

Interesting reading. Thanks.

Not saying nothing happened involving National Guard, but I had heard it was the local sheriff's departments that were rounding up guns to never be returned. I had not heard of the NG involvment.
