Default Outdoor safe places to practice??

Hi, new member here and I like the info I'm finding.
I recently bought a very nice S&W 38 airweight snubbie (642) from Advanced Arms. I'd like to take it out and put a few rounds through it.
Aside from the local ranges (and I've only found a couple), is there an out-of-the-way area to shoot a bit? Coal area? Pits? There's got to be some place not too far out from Wilkes-Barre that a guy can go....??
I'm just planning on taking a few boxes along- I picked up some shellshot for the .38 and want to take a few shots at them just to see pattern, kick, etc.
Any help??
