I've killed plenty of stuff.
Don't worry about it. Animals do some crazy shit when their dead. Killed a snapping turtle once. Cut his head off. Two hours after he was still trying to crawl. Made good soup too.

unless it is an Old Yeller scenario or you are going to eat it, or it is diseased, I generally refrain from shooting things in the head...like daddy always said, you kill it, you eat it, period.
The issue of feeling pain is interesting...on the one hand, does it matter? I mean, if you kill it and the last 5 minutes of its life sucked and then it becomes plant food, what difference does it make? The whole notion of an afterlife screws with your head though...like its horrible death is a trauma it is going to have to live with forever. Whats done is done...next time, try a potassium overdose. And if it had rabies and you got some splash backI hope you didn't have any open wounds.

I just wanted to mention a few things that I know about wounds and ballistics. First off, in pistols, "hydrostatic shock" doesn't necessarily kill. In rifles though, it is a COMPLETELY different story. Rifle bullets do not just tear or push tissue, the hydrostatic shock from them can make a head or chest cavity completely explode. A 230 grain hollow point moving 980 something fps doesn't even compare to what a 180 grain hollowpoint does at 3,100 fps. Jackal, now this is just my humble opinion, but I have had alot of hunting and "dead animals" experience. I don't believe that the cat was dead when you first shot it, sorry buddy. You have to realize that the amount of energy that enters the body is related to how long it's in the body, velocity, size, etc. A full metal jacket bullet passes directly through a body very quickly (especially at the range you mentioned), and it does not deliver the full amount of energy that it potentially has because the bullet does not expand, and after it exits it doesn't deliver the rest of that energy. Full metal jacket bullets do not have very much "hydrostatic shock" because they do not expand the way a hollow point or expanding full metal jacket bullet does.
You said there was a bullet hole right in the top of it's head, which makes me believe towards the center in terms of left and right, and front to back (medial?). If that is the case, and the angle that you mention it with through the torso and exits behind the right front leg, it makes me believe you missed the medulla. In order to get a "zero reflex" shot, you have to hit the medulla (aka "apricot") or you have to sever the spinal column from the brain. I believe that you missed those, and so it was not a "quick kill". Animals do twitch, kick, jerk, spasm, etc, when they are headshot, but I have never seen one that was coordinated enough to get up and run and sit on top of a log before it started into more spasms and die. I believe that you did hit the cat in the brain, knock it out (which people and animals spasm during unconsciousness/knock out), in which case it recovered, ran, and then died due to blood loss and trauma. I have personally shot a deer through the head (in one ear out the other, literally) that went down like a ton of bricks from 250 yards. He was originally looking at me, but turned his head slightly as the shot broke. I was using a 180 grain hollow point, got to the deer, all of the frontal and medial parts of the brain were missing, but the medulla was intact. When my friend's dad went to cut the throat while I held the antlers, he woke up. I bulldogged him, and he picked me up with him on top of him; so I bulldogged him again. The second time I guess I winded him, and kept one antler pinned down to the ground with my foot and leaned on the other antler while I cut his throat. He finally bled out, but I was pretty upset that I had to do that to that deer; I wished I would have made a clean headshot. I'm not proud of it, and didn't feel that the shot shouldn't have been taken, it was just bad luck that he turned while the bullet was in flight; that's the chance you take with a headshot (why some people don't agree with them). In my humble opinion buddy, I'm sorry but he was not a "dead cat walking;" he most likely suffered a little bit, but to be honest it probably wasn't any worse of a death than he would have suffered in the wild. You learned a few hard lessons today man, because you have a conscience. 1. Make sure that you use the proper bullet for the job; if you want to dispatch an animal quick, hollow points can be a bit more expensive and messy, but they are the most humane. 2. When dispatching animals and it's possible, sometimes a small caliber at point blank range on the medulla works better and is more humane. 3. No matter how many times you plan a shot or think it should work out; it doesn't always happen that way. I'm sorry buddy, but I assure you that you'll get over it; I'm sorry that you had to learn this this way, but I bet that it doesn't happen again this way. Sorry buddy. |

It is a cat, that means we have more rabbits and squirrels to hunt.
cats get shot before game, except deer season, dogs go down too.
