100 yards? Really the .30-30 isn't intended for much beyond that and the ballistic performance out past that is horrible, the round nose just drops off the table.

here is the anticipate drop of a 150 gr 30-30 bullet, so this is with the scope sighted in at 100 yards, you'll expect to see a 10 inch drop at 200 yards:
Muzzle 100 200 300
-1.50 0.00 -9.40 -35.70

IF you want I'd say try the Hornady LeverEvolution, they are more pricey but supposedly awesome, I have 2 boxes I just haven't shot them yet

100 yds with standard flat nose ammo will easily take down a deer. 150yds is a realistic max.

Hornady revolution ammo turn the humble .30-30 into a 200-250 yd rifle easy.
It's worth the extra coin.

Absolutely out to 100 yards it'll be effective. Dredly is dead on about the LeverEvolution. I think I mentioned this in another thread, but I use that cartridge in .35 Remington and it really extends the effective distance. I've never shot the .30-30 but I'll bet that it gets you another 50-75 yards if necessary. The shape of the LeverEvolution bullet has better ballistic qualities than the standard soft point.

its not so much that it won't kill a deer at 200 yards... its good luck getting the bullet to hit where you want it at that range. 10 inch drop is a LOT and by that range its going slow.

The 30-30 is a great rifle especially if you hunt in wooded areas where shots over 100 yards are few and far between. I know plenty of people who have harvested deer with a 30-30 with a 100+ yard shot. I wouldn't recommend it over 150 yards though due to the fact that a 30-30 is a slow shot. I just currently debated on getting one since I mainly hunt wooded areas but then I decided on the 30-06 since you have a lot less drop once you get past 100 yards. Either way its a great gun and will handle deer with ease when used under 150 yards.

I used a 30-30 for years back in Wisconsin... because of the usual ranges less than 100 and sometimes even under 25 the 30-30 is EXCELLENT in thick brush. The longest I ever shot a deer with it was 137 yds... but it was coming almost right at me and I had alot of brush in front of me and it was the only place I could take a clear shot... Practice with it and if ya use a scope make sure you have either a tip off mount or see thru to use the iron sights for shorter ranges..... GOOD LUCK... and safe hunting

Paul

I hunted with a Winchester model 94 .30-.30 for years. Longest shot was close to 150 but it was a dumb move and I got lucky. The majority of my shots were in the 60-80 yards range I would guess. It's a great short range caliber and if I get the chance to replace it I would.
