Bald Eagles

Anybody know of any good concentrations of Bald Eagle nests near Gettysburg, or within a decent drive? We swear we saw one this afternoon fly over...that white head was unmistakeable.....unless we made a mistake.

Yeah, I know the difference between raptors, but this was kinda high and through trees.

Sorry no. I know they are making a big comeback though. I saw zero in ten years here, up until last summer, when I saw one take a fish from the Delaware river. This year, I have already seen four in different areas. Had my son with me when one landed maybe fourty feet in front of us on the road to pick at a piece of roadkill. We rolled up about twenty five feet away and watched it for a few minutes, until it launched itself and it's dinner upward. Man, what a sight. The boy still talks about it two weeks later.

I have seen them at Whites Ferry between MD/Va and Point of Rocks......but not up here around Gettysburg. I love Eagles. I'd like to find some active nests and take some shots (photos that is).

If you guys lived up here I could point you to at least a half dozen nests.
Coolest thing I've ever seen was one snag a fish out of the lake.
I'll see if I can get a pic to post.

There was a nesting pair in Langhorne ( Bucks County ) last year. Don't know if they are still here

Eagle numbers soaring

On a recent sunny afternoon in Codorus State Park, visitors bundled in sweaters and scarves sit and talk on a park bench, or walk their pets along Lake Marburg.

This month, dedicated bird-watchers will flock to the lake, where they'll set up their spotting scopes and sit for hours to catch a glimpse of one of the park's leading attractions: a pair of bald eagles nesting with their eggs.

Until recovery efforts began for the bird that was once on the endangered species list, few people in older generations dreamed of ever seeing the American symbol.

"The only place you saw it was on a piece of money," said Vince Peterson, the assistant park manager at Codorus State Park.

And while the eagles can frequently be seen flying through the park or dipping into the lake for fish, the sight is still anything but ordinary.

Lake Raystown here to the west of you has a decent number of nesting pairs and it is not uncommon to see them on the lake or moving up and down the Juniata fishing.

Up here in Henryville north of stroudsburg i saw one "fishing" on the Cranberry creek, this one were an adult , very big and beautiful, a really majestic creature.

about a year or two ago some idiot shot one.

You might just as well see one as they have wings and can go anywhere they want, but look for them near water as fish is their main diet.
