Default Saturday ghogs

Well, this saturday I have a hunt planned at a farm. Because the farmer demanded that I start now and that they're "all avoer the place those gopher devils!!" So, this weekend I shall reduce the populatin for him so he stops calling me about it, maybe I'll go friday too since I have off school........

thats great!!

I usually wait til the new broods have matured enough to survive on their own.

chucks are getting hard to find here. hawks, coyote, dogs, cats, bobcats, and bear have really killed off the chucks in my old areas. I'm trying some conservation to help maintain a balance.

Same here. I usually give them to mid-April. Then I combine my gobbler scouting with hog hunting.

They all need to pay for their sins....

I might let em go till the very end of april..........if i can resist? They are just starting to clean out their holes. I've been waiting since the last day of deer season so if i make it another day it'll be a miracle.

I let them go untill the day after Memorial Day. Gives the little ones a chance to fend for theirselves.

if they are a pest like everybody says they are why do we let the young have a chance? not like they will have a chance in april when they take a bullet to the head...

Deer are considered a pest in some places. Why give the young a chance? Chuck hunting is a real sport and challenge to me. I believe in giving them fair chase. I get no enjoyment out of an "easy" kill.

Questioning of why to give the chucks a chance is like saying "there are billions of passenger pigeons - we'll never kill them all."

Despite the damage the can do to equipment and livestock - they do serve a purpose in the ecological balance of our native wildlife and plant life.

If you notice head count is rather low - its up to us to start conservation of the species. Chucks are getting really hard to find in my family's areas of Clearfield, Jefferson and Elk Counties. I see more doe deer on a given hunting season morning than I see woodchuck in an entire year in the area.

What do you do after shooting them is the question
I eat what I kill, you?

Not counting BG's

Tried it once...at least they said it was Ghog. Tasted like a cross between rabbit, king monkey and dog. But, I kill Ghogs as a favor for a farmer. His place, and his brothers, is extremely over populated with them. For that, I get a fantastic place to shoot dove, turkey, and hunt deer in each season. These farms are over populated with deer also...which he is not thrilled with. He's looking into crop damage stamps for us this year.

To him....the only good groundhog is a dead groundhog.

As for eating what you kill.......hope you where never in that position if you ever served our great country.
