I had a Savage 9317...shot a red fox under 60 yards and it ran off. I was so pissed at the 17hmr I sold it to a friend. I know some people say they shot coyotes with a 17, but I'm not convinced of the 17's power. I later bought a Russian BB in 22 mag and I love this rifle...great trigger, very accurate...and the 40gr ammunition will drop a fox.

I know that a lot of predator hunters use the .204 Ruger or the 22 hornet, but the most popular caliber for true predator hunters is the 17 Remington. You should reload if you buy a 17 Remington.

I predator hunt, but I'm not hard core about it. I know hunters that use 223 as well.

Good luck with your season.

I don't hunt fox but I do hunt coyotes.

I like the .243 Win. It's a bit much for fox, but perfect for long range shots on coyotes. I'm not concerned at all about pelt damage.

I chose that caliber because I wanted something that shot flat, would put a coyote down with one shot, but would be something that I could also use for groundhogs and deer if necessary.

Any of the true varmint calibers like the .223, .243, .22-250, and .220 Swift would be good for coyote but may be too much for fox.

The .204 Ruger, .22 Hornet, and .17 Remington mentioned before would be better all purpose cartridges for both.

It really all depends on where you're hunting, how long of a shot you expect to take and how much pelt damage you're willing to tolerate.
