Default .22lrhp klling power

The killing power of this round is greatly under or over estimated, I have even had people say it isn't enough for squrills, I have killed hundreds of woodchucks and with good chest hits a 50 yards it is perfectly adiquate, I've killed 5 or 6 foxes with it and had no problem. Now to be sure with a .22lrhp except on squrill size game accuracy is VERY imporntant it will never kill woodchuck size animals quickly unless you get a solid chest or brain shot but with good shot placement it is perfectly adiquate, like a .30-30 on deer, with a good hit it is wonderful but a gut shot is almost assuredly a lost animal. Heck it's almost too powreful on squrills unless you make a head shot.

My brother-in-law is a squirrel killing machine and uses only .22 shorts to do so. His method of hunting them is a bit different also. He walks through the woods till he sees one, chases after it till it climbs high and to the opposite side as they are prone to do. then he waits for them to stick their heads out to check where he is--bang.

Any cartridge can result in a wounded and lost animal if you make a gut shot. A .22 will easily kill a deer with proper shot placement at a reasonable distance, just as a magnum cartridge will fail to kill a deer with poor shot placement. You can ruin a lot of squirrel or rabit meat with poor shot placement just as well as you can ruin most of a deer with a .243 shot to the hind quarters at 300 yards. .22LR is a more powerful round than a lot of people think, but not as powerful as some would like to think.
That being said, and referring back to your opening sentence, the killing power of this round is both greatly underestimated and greatly overestimated, it depends on who you're talking to and in what context.

You must hit woodchucks in the front 1/2 of the chest if standing on all four feet or the top 1/2 of chest if on hind legs, the same shot placement ofr foxes, most shots I've made were between 40 and 60 yards.

I agree that the .22 LR is plenty for groundhogs. I have used a LR HP at distances up to 75 yards with one shot kills. My preferred ammo is the Federal/American Eagle #AE22, it comes in the 40 pack and is a high velocity round. It is either 36 or 38 grains. Plenty accurate for silhouette shooting.

Best regards,
chalmitch
