I do believe that you can carry a semi auto for protection as long as you have a LTCF...

As of 2007, yes. LTCF holders may carry semi-auto pistols for self defense while hinting/spotting.

I was really happy to read that in this years hunting manual. It was something I always wanted to do but didn't want to get hassled by "the man."

Yes, you can carry a semi auto with you while hunting, IF you have a LCTF. However, if you wound an animal DO NOT use the semi auto to finish the kill. If you do you have now violated the PGC rule against using a semi auto firearm for hunting. If you are carrying a revolver you can use that for finishing shots. Also remember that any hunting firearm needs to be .20 caliber centerfire or larger (for big game).

.20 caliber or larger CENTERFIRE cartridge only (something with a primer in the center). .22 LR (a Rimfire cartridge) is NOT allowed (rimfire - the priming material is the the bases' edge) It used to be that it had to be a .25 caliber centerfire or larger but with the new high power .20 caliber and larger rifle cartridges (.204 Ruger, etc) they changed what is now allowed.
