Default 1903 Springfield

I got a 1903 Springfield that someone had an odd set of scope mounts on. These rings have one small screw each and they held an old Bushnell scope (shot). One of the screws (bolts) is broken, I have never seen rings like these before, and I want to redo the whole set-up. The rear of the reciever is higher than the front, and where these holes are, I'm not sure how to proceed without some costly milling work (which I can't do myself), or some kind of wedgelike thick shim under the whole works (also tuff 4 me to do). Is there a trick to mounting a scope on one of these?

Is it a 1903 or a 1903A3? The receiver will be marked. Does it have rings and bases and where are these mounted? Usually, these days, bases are mounted in the front and rear of the bolt on the receiver. In days gone by, one was mounted on the receiver in front of the bolt and the other on the barrel. Modern bases come in pairs or as one piece and are dimensioned such that no machine work is required on the receiver other than drilling and taping. Here is some pics of the installation of a one-piece base:

Here are some of a two-piece install:

And some more one-piece:

The Springfield has a rep for being very hard to D&T. If the new style bases require new holes, make sure it’s done by someone who knows what needs done.

Thanks Steve, its an A3 and the old mounts were both on the reciever. We don't have a real 'smith in our little town. I think I'll take your sage abvice and put this aside until I can have somebody with the skills and tools to do things right this time. The other screws were very small, the rear is broken off inside the rec. , a mess! Oh-Well, some other day! Thanks again.
