No, 5.56x45 will not function in an AK. This old saw never seems to die.
as a guy who has built 40-50 AK's of all types, and currently has over a dozen, i can speak with some authority about them. you can get a 5.56X45 (223) round to go off in an AK. I did it by accident last spring.

one of my boys was loading mags and mixed a 5.56 steel cased wolf round in a mag full of 762X39. he handed it to me and i went through the motions. the 5.56 was quiet, and expanded to fill the chamber. the bullet prolly tumbled down the bore and left it at a few hundred FPS. i had to knock the case out with a cleaning rod.
