1911 barrel marks - problem?

My PT1911 has been a pleasure to shoot, but I have a question. So far only about 220 rounds through it (mostly WWB), and when I was cleaning it I noticed a few small marks on the top of the barrel under where the bushing would be:



The inside of the bushing looks completely smooth, so I have idea what could be causing this. I doubt I could be doing it when disassembling it for cleaning. I'm very careful and I would think it would take a fair amount of force to make marks like these. I don't think they were there out of the box. Any ideas? Should I be worried?

might be coming from a small burr inside of the bushing.

take a feel with your finger and see if you fee any rough spots.

if you are confident enough a half round file and some cold blue cream afterwards and all should be good.

+1 sounds about right to me. If you file it yourself just be careful not to go to deep. Check the bore to make sure the impact didn't cause any deflection in the rifling. Impacts like that do funny things.

Lets step away from the files.....

Are you sure these are new marks? Is the bushing gouged or rough inside?

If not and the gun locks up tight.....let it alone. Fling could just loosen it and decrease accuracy.

On another note....that looks like some hard hits to me and may have been a bad barrel. You may be able to take Taurus up on the lifetime gurantee on that one.

I'm not 100% sure they are new. I would have thought I would have noticed them when I cleaned it before I ran my first rounds through it, but it's possible I missed them I guess. The inside of the bushing feels smooth, and it glides over the barrel with no resistance that I can feel. That was the first thing I checked. If there was something there, it's gone now. It seems to be locking up tight, but as I say, I'm a neophyte to 1911s.

I guess I can run some more rounds to it and compare it to the picture as a baseline to see if any more appear. I hate to send it back to Taurus if this is essentially a cosmetic issue.

I took a second close look at the bushing, and it is completely smooth. There's just nothing there that could be causing this. I also don't see any way for something like this to happen during field stripping. At this point, I'm starting to think it's been there from day one, as I can think of no way for anything to contact that area during slide action and maintenance other than the smooth surface of the bushing.

Question for the group: if it were yours, would you contact Taurus to pursue a repair? Or would you live with it, since the pistol has otherwise been fine?

What metal is the barrel made of?

I'd send it back:

(A) Because it's free,

(B) They should only need the slide and barrel to fix it and that can go regular mail.

(C) I'm kind of particular.

Call Taurus and see what they say is my recommendation.

Done. I called them, and they said to send in the barrel and bushing for replacement. I'm packaging it up now. Presumably I'll end up with a barrel with a different serial number, but I can live with that.

As a point of information, I asked about insurance value for shipping and the rep told me the barrel goes for $90 and the slide $20.
