I've looked into it as well but an still hoping to find someone in the area that's done it before I take the jump. I have a Polish PMKMS kit sitting in wait. I'd say it's going to be easier to buy a complete receiver for a first build...rather than a flat. Nodak Spud makes the nicest out there in my opinion. Second, use rivets not screws. My take on it is they're not much harder to do and they're more secure. Only down side to this is you have to get the receiver shipped to an FFL and transfer it like you would a complete firearm...but other than that it's free and clear. Not really a big deal they'll just have to do the instant check on you. If you absolutely don't want it on the books then a flat is the way to go...but you'll need to buy a bending jig which will cost you more money. Doing it yourself saves alot of money. If you buy a Romy G kit ($120), US parts ($50 or so), and a receiver ($60+transfer fee) you can have a very good AK for less than $250.

Thank you Deth and cms. Started pricing flats today, my biggest hurdle may be heat treating. I have experimented with heat treating knife blades, and have on occaision overdone it , resulting in brittle steel. May go with a couple of flats, now that I think about it. Thanks again.

heat treating is easily enough done with a std plumbing torch and a mapp gas bottle, a coffee can filled with motor oil, and a kitchen oven.
its just an ak- dont overthink it. they are made by monkeys in grass huts

Not if you include the cost of the tools and jigs to bend those flats. In this case, you'll spend -more- than buying a pre-bent receiver. The only plus I can see to bending it yourself is having control over the serial number.

PA Rifleman...that's why I kinda suggested getting a complete NDS receiver above. Yeah unless you're building alot of AK's then buying a Jig isn't really worth it...unless you plan on selling it after a few builds.
