Default my "national match 91/30"

ok, not really, but i did some work on it today.

took it out and found it to be shooting about 12-16" high at 100yd.

as it turns out, there is no elevation adjustment on these !!

so here's what i did...(sorry, not much on taking pics while i work)

drift the front sight out of its dovetail.

punch out the orig front sight post from the top down.

the hole there is very close to the #33 drill used for a #6x40 tap. this is a fine thread and not that popular, i happen to have a good supply of these though, im sure a #6 coarse thread could be made to work just as well.

tap the hole where the old sight post was pressed in.

btw, i found the site to be VERY easy to machine!!

take a samll screw (i used a 1/2" shcs) and chuck it up in your lathe. i turned about as much as i though i needed sticking up to roughly the same diam of the old post. i turned the head off so it was just sightpost and threads left.

slap some oxpho-blue on the assy and put it all back together.

the post can be turned fairly easily with a pair of needel nose on it. i plan on now sighting it in, then putting a small dab of ca glue or clear nail polish on it to hold it in place.

VIOLA!!! an adjustable site!!!! it is very difficult to tell anything has been done to it by looking at it. you would never notice unless you were specificaly looking for it.

while i had it apart, i also decided to polish the trigger and cocking piece some.

well, still a shitty millitary trigger. on a scale of 1 to 10, though, id say it went from a 1 to a 1.2-1.3!!! polishing the cocking piece did make the opening of the bolt a good bit smoother though!!

Did you check the rear sight elevation setting? Also, what type of ammunition were you shooting?

True, I noticed when shooting my 1933 91/30 without the bayo it shot very high, about 9 - 10 inches at 100 yards. With the bayo it was about 3-4 inches high at the same distance. After playing with the rear elevation sight I was hitting bull at 50 yards and an inch or 2 high at 100.
