Default Wire Springs

Anyone out there ever tried making wire springs?
I've got an old Menz that is missing two springs and photos that show what they look like and where they fit.
I've tried making wire springs in the past with no luck.
Now is when I'd appreciate one of those old smiths if I could find one.

Default Re: Wire Springs

depends what 'kind' of spring you need.
coil? good luck with that.
i made a few torsion springs using piano wire or guitar string, one was even for a gun project.

Default Re: Wire Springs

I made a few springs in my machining classes. But unless you have done it a lot, it is kinda a crap shoot as far as what size wire to use, how close to put the coils, etc. We use old piano wire and the springs worked fine for what we wanted them to do. If I had the time and spare wire I would try it. Otherwise, its not worth it to buy the wire to experiment with....IMO.
