if they are indeed what i think they are, being an m1909 and an m1917, they both had a colorful history prior to your great uncle purchasing them.

You seem very knowledgable about these pistols. To aid the truth finding, would you mind if we goto PM and so that I provide more details to see if we can find out more about them? Or maybe an open thread so other can learn as well? I am totally not being a smart ass, I have been speaking to mauser here on the boards about these pistols IRL. I owe some more pics as he is helping me find more information about them.
The only things I know to be fact is, my great uncle never fired them, and never refinished them. I understand now of what you were saying, so would you be interested in helping me learn the history of these pistols? Be it via PM or public thread in the right forum? I would love to learn more about them since my google searches and things didn't yield great results.
