Snap, that's hot! So what does it cost to run? About $1,100 per minute?
WARNING! Short war story ![]() I was the tank driver on a M551 Sheridan which also made me the .50 cal loader for the tank commander. When we got into a firefight, I was loading and running through M-16 mags as quick as I could eject the old one and jerk the charging handle. (We called that spray and pray). The tank commander was on Ma Deuce. I was feeding him fresh belts of .50 cal, and pouring motor oil from a 5 gallon jerry can on the barrel to keep it cool. (I didn't think until recently how exposed I was standing on the deck with that oil can.) ![]() About the 3rd or 5th belt, I let my TC run dry, and had to quickly re-load him, but this time I got "smart" I opened a second ammo-can and linked the two belts together. Only, it took me so long I didn't get back topside to cool the barrel in time. I actually saw a barrel get so red hot you could see the rounds passing through the barrel. Eventually it drooped enough, the bullets were hitting the top of the flash suppressor throwing sparks of hot metal and the tracer rounds were flying all over. It looked like a Roman Candle. We just changed out to the spare barrel and kept going. You wouldn't want me as your oiler/loader, would you General? P.S. I guess the story wasn't so short, Sorry.
