I'm still not understanding what the speak up line is going to do. What happens when a 14yo from OHIO calls and says he buddy is really pissed off and says he wants to kill this kid at school? do these people think that talking to the kid is going to prevent it? Odds are there was some really bad stuff going on with the kid that drove him to shoot these people. No body ever wants to take into account our actions and the events they cause. If you beat up a kid every single day of school odds are one day he is going to do something back.. maybe we should have national BE NICE month! |

IF ne were threatening people/pointing a gun at people they could charge you with "assault" or perhaps "terroristic threats". But you would have to be clerly using the gun to threaten someone or the charge would go nowhere... |

These signs are a very bad precedent. Furthering the notion that guns are bad or if you have a gun your a criminal. This operation needs shut down. |

I would be curious to call the number and ask them about open carry. Say I just saw someone walking down the street with a pistol on. Is that illegal? Just find out what kind of information they are giving out.

I think the idea isn't all that horrible, if you look at the PDF file they are distributing, the idea is that 90% of the school shootings that occur someone tells someone else they are going to do it. If those other people would just report that threat to the authorities perhaps a couple shootings could be avoided, police or school officals can call their house, talk to the parents, let them know their child is obviously having an issue, maybe offer to have him talk to the school councilor?
I am big on 2nd amendment/RKBA/no more gun laws, but I think we need ideas, don't just slam the posters, come up with a better idea. I don't think the posters are as much anti-gun as they are "if someone tells you they are coming to school to kill everyone tomorrow, TELL SOMEONE" and I think that message is a good one. Monty

Exactly how common are these school shootings? I'd also be curious what exactly is being said.. When I was a kid if someone told me they were going to shoot everyone in the school on tuesday you can believe I would have told someone. Kids are not stupid. I agree we need discussion on the issue. How about having the school provide armed security?? |

Probably the worst thing is the not being able to face your accuser. Anyone can say anything about you and you have to prove it wasn't you. In this case it is guilty until you prove your innocence. Now I don't know about the police in SEPA but up here in the Centre Region the police I know are pretty good. If someone were to report something like that and they investigated and found that the call was not legit, they wouldn't hassle the guy (or gal). They seem to have some common sense up here.
Off subject for just a bit. MichaelB - your nephews are 9 and 11, you should have had them out when they were 5 or 6. Mtbkski - guess what, billboards are EXPENSIVE, unless you have them in places that are not heavily traveled. The Knights of Columbus have one on 322 outside Port Matilda and it costs about $135 per month, and that does not include what it cost to get the sign made. And you have to find an empty board. The more people can see the board the higher the cost. Not a bad idea though.
