First, if you want check out that other link. It goes into a little more detail about hunting rifles which Lycanthrope is talking about. It talks about the power the hunting rifles have, which I know nothing about. It also talks about true AP rounds. The military has tungsten cored rounds now, which will penetrate greatly.
People are right and wrong. When you see people talking about building a SHTF pack they buy steel plates for a reason. Ceramic plates aren't "hard" like steel. Ceramic plates are more like kevlar. If you cut one open its layers of ceramic material and a liner that hold the layers together. When you get hit with a round it enters and breaks up on the material. It can absorb multiple hits, but then its trash. If you get hit in the same spot where there is a hole, your shit up a creek without a paddle. It can withstand multiple hits, but then your gonna need a new one. They hold together pretty well. A friend said one of his buddys got hit with 4 rounds at 50' and looked at the vest. It was swiss cheese, but he was still alive. Steel on the other hand is rigid. It's more likely to only dent unless the bullet is powerfull enough to go through. Unless the energy is sufficient to change the chemical properties of the steel in that spot, it will largely retain its strength. Ceramics are stronger, lighter but have to be replaced. Steel is heavier, but can be dropped without fear and is less likely to need to be replaced. Check out Kejo and bulletproofme.com they have plates at a cheap price if anyone is building a SHTF setup. |

No thing protect better than a feet of sand against small arms fire, he he he
http://www.theboxotruth.com/docs/bot7.htm Cheap and plentiful. Those in science seem to ignore the obvious. They should find out how sand stop bullets and design a vest that have this property. On the molecular level, the theory might work. Just my two cents for today... 1FingrCHan |

Would someone in the Harrisburg area please try to keep up with this story? It would be interesting to learn if this creep had prior convictions that eliminated him from legal gun possession and how he obtained the gun. Likewise, we should now if he's charged with and tried for illegal gun possession if that is the case.

As far as it not being too expensive, I agree that it can be found pretty reasonable (I have approx. 700 rnds of chinese steel core all bought for 15 to 17 cents per round, includung a 550 rd. spam can for $110), but the norm right now is $200+ per spam can. (makes me wish I hadn't opened the can, I could have almost doubled my money! -Joe-

well now- I own a romanian ak I have four thirty round mags. and four twenty round mags. loaded and ready to rock at any time! And I do believe any 7.62x39 full metal jacket;ie wolf ammo that I shootwill penetrate soft body armor. This does not mean I"m a punk or gang member. I get so sick of the news media painting this picture everytime something like this happens/why can't they say the truth? [stupid druggy, gang member shoots it out with area police using a semi-auto rifle]But I guess that does'nt sell papers like the truth!!

Well even if the bullet can't pierce the material I'm sure thousands of pounds of force will still knock one down pretty hard. Multiple deflected hits could still kill you from internal bleeding. On the military channel, a soldiers helmet got hit by an AK round. It sent him flying backwards, and his helmet flew right off his head. He landed on his back, and discovered that he wasn't actually shot.
