Hard plates will stop anything upto a .30 AP round as long as you have soft armor behind it. That means 7.62x39x51, .223, etc.
I'm not so sure about that. SS109 (or M855 if you like the military designation), which you can pick up anywhere, will penetrate standard NATO 3.45mm steel plate at 640 meters.

The "Armor Piercing" ammo they showed on ABC27 news looked like steel cased Wolf, or any other variety, nothing special. Made it sound real scary though.

Some interesting articles about bullet performance and bullet proof vest protection here
http://www.angelfire.com/art/enchanter/pigboard.html
Note that .45 ACP defeats unarmored human target pretty well, a little scary however.

My 7STW will go through 1/2" steel plate at 250 yards.....with Ballistic Tips.

Any high velocity cartridge.....which can quickly compress the metal to melting can puncture metal armor plate.

I love this line in the article:
"Police say it not illegal to own body armor, but it is illegal to use it to commit a crime."

I thought commiting a crime was also illegal. I'm sure the bank robber says, "Yo Joey, we betta leave dees boolit-proof vests at home. It's illegal to wear dem when we rob dat bank."

Sorry my camera is being a pain in the ass. There's a set of my ceramic plates. Those are standalone level IV, throw some soft armor behind it and they are good for .30 cal AP. Check out the links below.

Your shooting at a low alloy steel plate. Not all steel is strong. Low alloy steel isn't much stronger than an aluminum alloy. Rifle plates are made of high alloy steels or ceramics because they resist the impact energy/melting.

Our gov't can be stupid. But they aren't going to issue body armor that won't stop bullets. That would be pretty pointless.

Most importantly.....These rounds were designed yeaaaaars ago(IE M855 was type classified in 1982). There was no body armor back then. Ceramic/Steel plates were designed years after this ammo came out, to protect against these rounds.

Couple Links for reading:

http://www.inetres.com/gp/military/i...56mm_ammo.html

http://www.inetres.com/gp/military/i...62mm_ammo.html

And it doesn't surprise me they showed Wolf and talked about their AP abilities lol.

One thing that is usually missing from these stories is how did the BG get the gun! Did he buy at a gun shop or was it stolen, etc. There was a guy in Altoona a few months ago killed the mother of his children then himself with a handgun. In all the early reports you heard "police are attempting to find out how the gun was obtained". That was all you ever heard, I assume that it was illegally obtained. My feeling is that the press only wants to mention the legally purchased guns and fails to mention the illegally obtained guns.

Curious, anyone know how this guy got the black gun?

.
Homeboy I'm talking T1! I never said anything about steel quality. Where'd you get that? Do you know the STW?

I'm cranking 120gr bullets at 3750fps! 140's at 3500fps+

Plus, ceramic differs from metal plate. Ceramic doesn't melt.

Lycandontmisquotemethrope

P.S.- I'm pushing almost 2x the powder of the 7.62 with handloads.........

I have no idea what a 7STW is. But I always see people say, my gun will peirce a XXmm plate, so I assume you had some .308ish rifle shooting some decent quality steel plates. I didn't know you hand loaded.

ETA: What do you mean T1? Tool Steel? Aluminum?
