Don't blame the american citizen.
i'm not blaming anyone...i just think it is sad. it's sad that people have to be afraid to do the right thing. it's sad that we as americans have allowed our system to get this point.

i do have to admit that i personally find it disheartening that more americans don't take the attitude of doing the right thing regardless of the consequences, but i do understand why people make that decision.

Your attitude is right but your actions might be wrong.
actually, my actions would be right. they might get me in trouble, but they would still be right. maybe it's just a matter of semantics, but i think a big part of the problem is that we have been conditioned to allow the system to tell us what is right and wrong. but, it doesn't matter what the system says...or what the consequences are...right is right and wrong is wrong.

Things are not cut and dry any more. There is no black and white. A lot of grey. A lot of grey!!!!
yeah, there is a lot of grey in the world, but sometimes the world really is black and white (like the chicago case), but people just don't want to see it that way because it would require them to act...and they are (unfortunately justifiably) afraid of the consequences of acting.

i understand where you are coming from, though. and you are absolutely correct from a coldly rational self-preservation standpoint.

It's a shame but this country has gotten way out of hand with people suing each other. On the news the other day they were talking about how a few hospitals are doing away with delivering babies and maternity wards because they just can't afford the malpractice insurance. Years ago I had to take a CPR course as part of my job in an adolescent drug rehab. The instructor spent a good half hour on how you could be sued if you performed it wrong. Once you start giving CPR you MUST continue until someone relieves you, such as a medic or someone else who knows it, or you can be sued. CPR is a strenuous thing, in a stressful situation, you better hope other help arrives quickly. These are the types of things stressed in that class, sure made me not want to step up and help.

Getting involved in a domestic dispute is dangerous business. Like Lougotzz also mentioned a lot of times by the time the cops get there the parties don't want to press charges and may even bring them upon you for getting in the way.

Yes it's a sad state when you have to think about being sued or tossed into jail for trying to be a decent human being, but it is a fact of life these days. I am willing to lose everything, am I willing to go to jail, am I willing to risk my life, for a total stranger, sorry but I'm not. But I'll be the first on the phone to call those who are paid to do these things.

Just my $.04 (adjusted for inflation)

At this point the CPR situation has improved. There are now "Good Samaritan" laws that will protect you from being sued by the ungrateful bastard, or their family, whose life you saved.

I wish I didnt have to take this position of walking the other way.

Little redtoyota you are right. The good thing to do would be the right thing to do. What I am saying, it would be wrong if you get into real trouble for doing right. I think gun owners more then anyone are real sharp cookies. We know the truth about many things. It is because we have to watch at all times because there are so many who want to take this freedom from us. The majority of Americans have their head in the sand. So they too would think your right actions were wrong actions. It is kind of crazy to try to put this in words but I know you guys know what I am saying.

Unfortunately our nation is not at its highest point these days. I hope we return to the good old days otherwise it is only down hill from here.
