(Source: The News-Item)By Mark Gilger, The News-Item, Shamokin, Pa.
Oct. 4--COAL TOWNSHIP -- A juvenile cadet from Northwestern Academy escaped Friday after he allegedly attacked an employee by repeatedly hitting him in the head with a metal flashlight, police reported.
Seventeen-year-old Kyle Ball escaped from the facility, after which he is believed to have stolen a car from Kulpmont, police reported Friday. As of Friday evening, he was still at large.
Coal Township Detective Jeff Brennan said Ball faces multiple charges including aggravated assault, robbery, escape, simple assault, unlawful detention and theft. Brennan said the juvenile will be charged as an adult.
Coal Township Police Chief William Carpenter said the escape was reported to police at 2:09 a.m. by Northwestern Academy officials. He said Ball was living in an intermediate secure unit at the academy.
Eugene McGovern, an employee of Northwestern Academy, was apparently making his rounds in the Black Diamond Mine Dormitory when he was attacked by Ball. McGovern reported to police that Ball requested to be released from his locked dorm room so he could use the bathroom facility.
McGovern said he let Ball out of his room and continued making his rounds, during which he heard a noise. As he turned toward the sound, McGovern said Ball grabbed the metal flashlight from his hand.
According to police, Ball then reportedly struck McGovern in the head with the flashlight. McGovern told police the blow caused him to fall to the ground.
Ball reportedly asked McGovern for his keys while he was lying on the ground. When McGovern initially refused, Ball reportedly hit him in the head with the flashlight again, police said.
McGovern reported to police that he surrendered his keys to Ball after that second hit. The juvenile reportedly dragged McGovern into his dorm room and closed the door, which locked automatically.
According to a police report, a 15-year-old and an 18- year-old resident also witnessed Ball attack McGovern. The witnesses told police they saw McGovern run from the building.
One of the residents assisted in providing help for McGovern, police said.
In the attack, McGovern suffered a concussion and a laceration to the head requiring several staples.
Ball was described as being 5 feet, 7 inches tall, and weighing approximately 170 pounds. He has short brown hair.
Ball may be going back to his hometown area in Pocono Lake. He is suspected to have been driving a tan colored Ford Escort, Pennsylvania registration No. GHN-1401. The vehicle was reported stolen from the borough of Kulpmont and was taken around the same time Ball escaped from Northwestern, police said.
The police chief said an extensive ground search was conducted for the teen by academy staff members, Coal Township police and multiple officers from neighboring municipalities. He said a state police helicopter also was utilized, but the teen has not yet been located.
Carpenter said law enforcement authorities in the Poconos and other areas have been notified to be on the lookout for the teen.
I won't even get into the inconsistancies and inaccuracies of the article

so if YOU were a repeat offender (w/ new ADULT CHARGES looming overhead) on the run w/ a key to the ENTIRE facility, what would YOU DO?

Anything not disclosed in the article is not open for discussion by me due to confidentiality and a desire to continue receiving a full paycheck(for the time being anyways ). let's just say they don't come here for unpaid parking tix and skipping church choir practice. And I'm pretty sure he didn't learn how to steal cars WHILE he was at the "Academy"

Without knowing what he was originally there for, I can't comment about his escape. I have a friend who was sent to juvenile lockup for no more than arguing with his parents, whereupon they called the police and got him charged with assault. I've met his folks and they're a lot crazier than he is (or ever was), and I don't believe for a second that he ever raised a hand or fist at them.

So the bottom line is, no opinion without back story.

I hope they're changing the locks at that facility just as fast as they can. It sounds like he needs some medication while being incarcerated in a maximum security style facility...be it prison or whatever.

I just like how things have changed. He's not a criminal. He's a Juvenile Cadet. He's not in a juvenile detention center. He is in an Academy. Maybe the problems start when we begin to give less than honest lables to people that don't deserve the kid glove treatment.

You can thank the PA DPW and bleeding heart liberals for all that.....and unfortunately it is only getting worse.
