As various fund raising efforts come and go, I thought it might be a good idea to have a single place to note what's happening to the funds. To date, we have received just over $3800 in donations. I created a spreadsheet for each of the three current focuses, so I could accurately keep track of how to divide the growing stack of money. These sheets then balance against another set of numbers - based on what type of donation was received (cash/check/PayPal). If these two figures match, all is well. I removed all of the names, and asked a fellow-PAFOA member (who is an accountant) to look things over and offer their opinion. While these records don't meet current business accounting standards (and really aren't intended to), it seems that I was definitely on the right track.
During my own ordeal, the funds received went into my own personal account, from which they were then payed out to my attorney. As this appears it will now be an ongoing effort, showing my personal bank records with donation deposits and payouts mixed in seemed less than ideal. My accountant consultant agreed, and recommended that I open a separate bank account strictly for these funds. That way, there would be no need to black out my own personal transactions and the potential for confusion and most mistakes would be eliminated. That is exactly what I have done. I opened the account last week, and on Saturday wrote a check to shefearsnothing to cover the $1100 that has already been paid to her attorney. I have received documentation from her attorney to verify these charges. Prior to today's hearing, I had also received a verbal quote from Jack's attorney for a flat fee. I am awaiting documentation from the attorney and will be sending a check for $1000 (the quoted amount) when it is received. I am unsure where things are headed next for Jack, but will update "his" thread as that info develops. Just wanted to let everyone know what was going on with the funds in the meantime. If you have any questions or concerns in regards to this process, please let me know.

Not that I'm aware of, but that's not the point. Times are tight for everyone these days, so it's certainly reasonable that folks should have some assurance of exactly what's going on and that every penny is accounted for.
At least, that's the way I feel about it. I'm trying to hold myself to the same standard that I would expect of someone else. I think that being proactive in this type of action, rather than waiting until someone actually voices a concern is the way to go.
