I did go to my first IDPA shoot. I used my Serpa holster and had no problem with the draw, I didn't have any misses on hitting the release button. Being a new unclassified shooter they let me shoot without the cover garment but I did have a shirt that I never used. Next time I will cover up. I am a good shooter, up till now and really thought I would have done better. I Found myself trying to go too fast and my aim was not really aiming, I never saw my sights. My final score 147.?? had 90 points down. I found it to be fun and I think it will be great practice even as a game. Anyone who carries should do this type of shooting, standing 10 feet from a bullseye target is ok but this will help improve your skills for self defense.

I agree with those that argue that IDPA is a great way to become comfortable with your carry gear in more realistic situations. It's one big gun handling, shooting and movement drill under stress/pressure. So, there's tremendous value if you use your actual gear.
At the same time, this is absolutely a game. It's more game than real, and there's nothing wrong with approaching it as such and gearing up for the game. Maybe some of the "game" aspects and gear prove so successful that they become your carry gear and practice. For example, I wear my Wilderness Instructor belt a lot more often on the streets and am starting to favor my kydex OWBs over leather. So . . . 1. Welcome to IDPA. Try to shoot IPSC/USPSA stuff, too. Doing both will make you a better shooter. In my limited experience, IPSC shoots tend to have larger round counts, more movement and attract better shooters. IDPA rocks, too. 2. Good IDPA holsters Bladetech Stingray and CompTac. (Love both) I like belt holsters, but more shooters seem to prefer paddles.
