Default Pistols for USPSA/IDPA

I was curious what restrictions are put on the guns allowed for both USPSA and IDPA?

I was reading over the rule books for both and wasn't really sure what division I should consider entering. I also was a bit confused about the allowable number of rounds that you are allowed to have loaded in the magazines.

My plan was to use a M&P 9 (the full size model), but I'm not sure when my dealer is going to get the order in. So I might be forced to use my 1911, since it's the only other gun I have a holster and mag pouches for even though I think it might be a bit of a dissadvantage because of the 8rd mags.

Will my 1911 be allowed if it came from the factory with a mag funnel on it?

With the mag funnel your 1911 and 8 round mags is perfect for IDPA CDP division and USPSA Single Stack division. No disadvantage in those divisions.

Excellent. I just hope that my M&P gets here soon so I can practice with it.

With the M&P would I be limited to 10rds in the magazine with both USPSA and IDPA?

In IDPA you are limited to 10 rounds in SSP.

In USPSA you are limited to ten rounds in Production division.

You could shoot Limited and load the high capacity mags full, but you would be scored Minor and that would be at somewhat of a disadvantage. You could also shoot Open division and be scored major if the 9mm was hot enough, but then you would compete against optics, compensators and 29 round magazines......

Short answer: The division where the gun fits best will be limited to 10 rounds in the mag.

You can also shoot the M&P in Limited 10, you will not be at a round count disadvantage, but you will be shooting minor. If you get all "A" hits then it no big deal..

Do all the different divisions shoot the same course of fire?

In other words, if I bring my 1911, am I going to be engaging the same number of targets as the guys are with their 29rd guns? Or am I going to have to have 87 mags to make up for it?

What the heck gun holds 29rd any way, I read that number the other day, but had no idea what gun could hold that many?

All divisions shoot the same match/courses of fire.

You only compete against your own division but you may squad with shooters in different divisions. Shooters are also classed by skill level.

The 2011 series pistol with a 170mm magazine will hold around 29 rounds of .38 Super/9mm. These tend to dominate Open division.

It is rare to see a round count over 40 for a stage.

40 round stages??!?! Dear Lord!

I'm not going to have enough room on my belt for my holtster, it's going to be covered in mag pouches.

Well, in IDPA courses are usually limited to 18 rounds in one string. In USPSA it's usually 32 rounds.........but, at local matches sometimes you could see more...and you need a few extra rounds in case you miss or have a malf.

How many mag pouches do you guys typically have on your belts for matches?
