Default My first 45

I think it is time I bought a 45. The ones I am currently looking at are a 1911, an HK USP, and a SIG P220. I've shot a Springfield GI model 1911, but never an HK or Sig. What is everyones opinion?

Anyone know where I could acquire a USP or Sig P220 in the local area? What should I expect to pay for one (brand new)?

If your willing to drive to King of Prussia, Kings had one of each, a USP 45, a SIG 220, and various 1911's.

I'm getting a Sig 220 SAO, I like the feel of the Sig, as for the HK, I don't like the controls, namely the mag release. The USP 45 isn't too bad, but the other models feel like a toy to me, more so than any other polymer pistol. If your looking for a
.45 in single stack I'd suggest a Sig 220 or Sig 1911, if your looking for double stack get a Glock 21.

My other handgun is a Glock, so I want to try something different. I still like my Glock, but I just want to try a different gun this time (maybe I will like a different kind of gun more). This will be a home defense gun and it needs to work reliably right out of the box. I don't want to spend 1k+ on a 1911 or money down the road servicing it. I just want a gun that works and works all the time. That is what attracts me to HK, SIG, and Glock.

I know the HK has the mag release in an odd place -- do you think it would be something that one could get used to?

Let me know how you like the 220 as I would probably get it in SAO or maybe DA/SA.

Personally I like to keep my guns along the same style of operation, if your used to the Glock, get the 220 in DAK (DAO)

As for the USP, I like the KISS (keep it simple stupid) approach, why bother changing what your used to if you don't need to. if your used to looking for the mag button where it's supopsed to be, you'll get really pissed when it's not there.

I just bought a 220 because it fit my hand like it grew out of my palm. Sounds like you might not be 100% in love with your Glock. Glocks are awesome pistols, but I just don't care for them.

If you want to get a great price on a great used 220, check out Mark at Summit Gun Broker. He has some cherry 220R's with night sights for $515. He ships fast to your FFL. I could not be happier with the quality of the 220 I bought from him. You would never know that mine was not NIB.

I know where you are coming from on the 1911. I also love the way that they fit my hand. I looked hard at the Taurus PT1911 before buying the Sig. The Taurus comes with lots of goodies that would cost you extra dough if you were buying another model.

Good luck. Let us know what you decide.

I have a Springfield XD45 Service, a Sig 220, and a Taurus 1911. A buddy of mine has a USP(.40). I am not at all impressed by the USPs. In fact I downright dislike them.
They just aren't worth the price tag. Do you have a price range? Because Sigs can be well worth the money, but they are kinda pricey some places. I spent $650 on my P220(New). I am now getting an $800 P226. It is worth it though. XD's are damn cheap and amazing. I carry an XDSC everywhere. The Taurus 1911 is nice for a low priced 1911, but I have personal problems with Taurus that will prevent me from using the 1911 besides anything but range time. If you are looking for good prices, check out Ed's Sport Shop in Tamaqua, or my favorite, On Target in Frackville.

Also, what rolls do you plan on having it fill? Carry, Range, Home Defense, All of the above?

If it is worth the extra money, I don't mind spending more. I would say $800 is the max I want to spend. I still want to buy about 1000 rounds of ammo in whatever gun I choose.

I think I am settled on the SIG, but I have been looking more at the P229 DAK. I have heard a lot of good things about it, and the fact that just about every federal law enforcement agency uses it must be a good sign.

Greyhouse, good pick with the Sig! Well built, accurate as heck, and very dependable, will fill your hand comfortably, 220 or 229. Give us a report when you make your purchase(I was going to suggest a Colt)...Mike45

They way I see it, every gun is an investment, and ya might as well spend a little extra to get the goods. The 229s are very very nice. And I am in love with the DAK trigger system. It is so smooth. It is a little over your price range, but check out the Sig 229 Elite. If you get to handle one, you may just fall in love.
